The Story Behind the Songs

REGAN’S DREAM
Most people who hear this song think it’s a satanic reference to the Exorcist movie. While it’s true that “Regan” refers to the character in the film, the lyrics are about her internal struggle with the demon in her body – the human trying to survive.

DON’T SCREAM
Simply put, it refers to hitting your boiling point where you just want to scream! The irony of the song ”Don’t Scream” is that I scream all over it. Lol

FALLEN
There have been many cases of child molestation in the church. This song is about what these children would be like grown up. Are they able to forget, forgive? Great guitar solos in this song.

HEAVEN
This song originally was about whether or not you believe in heaven. How can you commit grievous acts, yet be able to simply repent and get into Heaven? Later, as family members passed, the song become more about hoping there is a heaven. Basia Lyjak (Step Echo, Barbie Lee Jack) did a great job in the studio, sharing lead vocals. Omar Ales (Harem Scarem) plays piano and keyboards on this track.

DELUSIONS
On this song, we  have Soilwork’s lead vocalist Bjorn (Speed) Strid take the bulk of the vocals. He crushed it! An absolute highlight for Phear to work with him.

PROUD
Proud is not a song about getting knocked down and feeling betrayed, it’s about getting back up after all that happens and coming back stronger and better than ever.

DROWNING MAN
The breakup song – every band needs one! This is ours. It’s about looking in the mirror and realizing that it takes two.

UNTIL YOU DIE
This song is about drugs. My voice is the drugs and Jon Howard (Threat Signal) is the voice of the addict. The percussion section in the middle of this track uses unique instruments, including “goat toes”.

MOTIVES UNKNOWN
This song is simply about looking into the mind of a serial killer.

BLOODLINE
Bloodline is our slow, Black Sabbath inspired salute to the vampire world. It was written before vampires were portrayed as the good guys, Travis Montgomery (Threat Signal) lays down a killer guitar solo on this track.

IN THE NAME OF
A lot of lyrical content is based on what I was reading at the time. “in the Name Of” was written about three separate predictions in the book of Nostradamus.

SEA OF LIES
This is another tune that lyrically was penned by Tyson and myself. It is a song about how lying perpetuates a vicious cycle of more lying to the point you can’t get out and up … drowning in a sea of lies. Kelly Kereliuk (Prismind) and Glen Drover (Megadeth, King Diamond) gave us killer solos on the intro to this song.

SNAP
I came into rehearsal one day and the boys were working on this riff. It was just a heavy groove thing, so we recorded it and used it as a hidden track on the CD.

RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER
We decided it was time to do a cover as we’d never done one before. We narrowed it down to Maiden, but agreeing on a song was difficult. Finally Rime was mentioned. Who the hell does a 15 minute cover? Phear does.
We needed an epic song and we agreed that Rime is Maiden’s most epic song. Recording was amazing. We use 7 string guitars, and although we stuck to the standard tuning, the low B string adds a heaviness that has to be heard.

DIRTY WORK
Dirty Work is a bit of a departure for us. With harmonies, we had a bit of an Alice In Chains vibe going on. A total groove song about getting the deed done and finishing what you start. It’s a fun song to play live.
